In many states the title architect is protected and needs a licence. Designers and drafters may draw plans without it. Ask which one you are hiring, and check what your state and your project require.

Services can range from early concept sketches to full construction drawings and visits during the build. Ask exactly which stages are in your agreement.

It depends on the state, and sometimes the city. Where a licence is required, ask for the number and check it with the licensing board before work starts. On Pros Around, "Licence verified" means we matched the licence number to the board's record on the date shown. We do not check insurance, so ask for proof of it.

Photos of the property, any plans or survey you have, a list of what you want, and your budget range. Say what is fixed and what can change. Ask what the architect needs from you.

Fee structures differ. Ask whether they charge a fixed fee, an hourly rate or a share of the building cost, what is extra, and how changes are priced. Get it in a written agreement.

The price depends on the size and difficulty of the job. Some pros publish a starting price on their listing. Ask two or three for a written quote that says what is included, and compare the scope as well as the price.
