It differs from job to job, so settle it in writing. Ask who supplies tile, adhesive, grout and trim, and who orders extra. Ask how much extra tile to buy for cuts and breakage, because the installer knows your layout.

Tile needs a flat, solid surface. The installer may need to level the floor, repair the subfloor, or add a waterproofing layer in a shower. Ask what prep your job needs, and whether it is in the quote or an extra.

It should list the area, the tile and pattern, removal of old flooring, surface prep, waterproofing where relevant, grout, sealing, trim, and cleanup. Ask what happens if the surface underneath turns out to be worse than expected.

Ask the installer. Different tile and grout types need different cleaners and sealing, and some should not be walked on or wetted for a while. Get the instructions from the installer and keep the product names for later.

The price depends on the size and difficulty of the job. Some pros publish a starting price on their listing. Ask two or three for a written quote that says what is included, and compare the scope as well as the price.
