Rules differ by state and city, and some trainers hold private certifications. Ask what they hold and whether any licence or permit applies in your state.

Trainers offer different things, such as basic manners, puppy classes or help with a behaviour problem. Tell the trainer what you want to change and ask how they would approach it.

Tell the trainer before booking. Ask if they work with this, how they keep people and animals safe and what they recommend. For a possible medical cause, talk to your vet.

Terms differ. Ask whether you buy a package or pay per session, what the cancellation rules are, and what happens to unused sessions.
